As tecnologias de alto desempenho no mundo móvel têm promovido uma verdadeira revolução na forma do trabalho, e esta revolução também tem afetado a forma como os serviços de alta tecnologia vêm sendo consumidos, como "SaaS" ou "XaaS", formalmente denominados OPEX.

Muito tem se falado da Computação em Nuvem. Mas precisamos ir além e pensar no Trabalhador em Nuvem. Para determinados perfis de empresas a solução terá que ser "Toda-na-Nuvem" mas podendo também ser uma "Mescla", via formato híbrido ou um Mix de tudo isto. Muitos modelos  e estruturas novos serão criados, requerendo adaptações culturais importantes. Não se trata apenas de tecnologias, mas também de pessoas. E uma pergunta crucial todos teremos que fazer é sobre os novos formatos de consumo de tecnologia, onde se adota cada vez mais o modelo OPEX, que vem rapidamente superando o modelo CAPEX. Desta forma, dado o seu caráter dinâmico,  produtos de tecnologia vêm sendo vistos como algo se consome cotidianamente, tal e qual a sua conta de luz ou custos condominiais e não mais como algo que se compra de uma vez só. 

No modelo OPEX o consumo de produtos e tecnologia é visualizado como um gasto mês a mês, seja na forma de aluguel de licenças (subscrição) ou aluguel de equipamentos (locação). Em geral, são contratos de curta (1 ano) ou média duração (3 anos), que viabilizam uma operação financeira que explicita o custo mensal real do uso da tecnologia, assim como outros recursos cujos custos são visualizados mensalmente. Este modelo foi bastante difundido pelos Produtos e Serviços que já vinham sendo ofertados através da Nuvem e que tendem a se tornar predominantes ao longo da década que se iniciou em 2021, agora aplicado a todos os tipos de produtos e serviços.

As vantagens que se colocam para a grande maioria das empresas consumidoras de tecnologia é o alívio financeiro ao dispensar a alocação imediata de um volume elevado de recursos de uma só vez, suavizando a curva de gastos. Este tipo de operação também possui vantagens fiscais e contábeis ao se considerar este tipo de dispêndio como custo, simplificando ainda a gestão do ativo fixo por parte das empresas e sua respectiva contabilização. Além disto, os softwares empregados já possuem um Upgrade incorporado e garantido, além do suporte do fabricante. Este modelo, portanto, simplifica sobremaneira a gestão dos custos e dispêndios com tecnologia, simplificando ainda a gestão da dinâmica de mudanças, já que upgrades já estão garantidos e não precisam ser adquiridos de tempos em tempos.

Desta forma, tem se tornado cada vez mais rara a aquisição de tecnologia através do modelo de "compra". Por outro lado, o modelo OPEX apenas se justifica na adoção de sistema que compreenda uma coerência entre os produtos de tecnologia que serão consumidos e a partir de um determinado valor mínimo.
